St. Michael Catholic (Ala.) head football coach Phillip Rivers working out for NFL team

Could we be seeing potentially another Teddy Bridgewater-like situation playing out out of Alabama high school football?

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, St. Michael Catholic head football coach and NFL legend Philip Rivers will be working out for the Indianapolis Colts, the team he played for one season back in 2020.

Rivers just completed his fifth season as the head football coach at St. Michael Catholic, with the Cardinals’ season ending in the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Class 4A state semifinals, losing to eventual champion Jackson, 44-23. The Cardinals finished the season with a 13-1 record and with the pieces returning on both sides of the ball, will be a favorite to win Alabama’s Class 4A in 2026.

The major component to it all is the return of NFL legend’s son, Gunner Rivers, who just finished up his junior season at St. Michael Catholic. Rivers, who is a four-star rated quarterback and ranked No. 2 overall in Alabama and No. 7 in the country for the 2027 class, will return after throwing for 3,176 yards and 46 touchdowns this past Alabama high school football season.

Rapoport says that the elder Rivers, 44, will fly up to Indianapolis on Tuesday and workout for the Colts, whom are thin at the quarterback position due to multiple injuries. If the workout goes well, the team could sign Rivers tomorrow to their practice squad.
