It’s only three weeks into the season, but New York Giants fans are already growing restless with the quarterback situation. Amid struggles from Russell Wilson on Sunday evening, the crowd at MetLife Stadium began to chant for rookie Jaxson Dart to take his place.
That never happened as the Giants went on to lose 22-9 and fall to 0-3 on the young season. With pressure ramping up for coach Brian Daboll to win now, he commented that the team was “working through all personnel decisions” heading into Week 4.
That’s vague enough to entertain the possibility that Dart might make his first career start when New York faces the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. Speaking on ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown , Troy Aikman considered how Daboll might be approaching the decision based on all of those factors.
“Unfortunately, as well all know when a team is struggling, the position that gets changed is the quarterback,” Aikman said. “Two weeks ago, we saw what Russell Wilson was able to do against Dallas. They very easily could have won that game. They failed to for a number of reasons, but then it wasn’t good enough the other night. As we’ve seen so many times, you draft a guy and that coach is under the gun.
“There’s so much pressure on Brian Daboll to win. He’s trying now to say, ‘What can I do save my job? What can I do to put some wins on the board that shows that we’re making progress?’ You can’t keep doing it the same way and have the same result. So there’s a lot of pressure on the organization and the people within the organization. The guy who’s gonna have to absorb that, in some ways unfortunately, Jaxson Dart.”
