New Orleans, LA– The New Orleans Saints are always looking for ways to improve the overall roster, as the team marches towards what it believes is a Superbowl year. The additions on the team recently have been to the secondary, wide receiver core and others. The receivers in particular was a position the team felt it had to add some depth so they signed veteran receiver Rishard Matthews.

The crafty eighth year former seventh round draft pick from Nevada is stirring Saints faithful with his presence on the team. Matthews who is a solid slot receiver whose career numbers are 230 catches for 3,160 yards and 21 TD’s averaging almost 14 yards a reception. During Minicamp Coach Payton invited Matthews in for a try-out and obviously like what they had seen of the former Titan receiver to ink him.

This signing creates a serious competition between Matthews and Fifth year veteran wide receiver Cameron Meredith. Meredith who came over from the Chicago Bears in 2018 via free agency signed a two year deal with New Orleans for $9.5 Million. The team and Meredith decided on a paycut last season as a lingering knee issue cut his season down to six games one start posting 9 catches for 114 yards 1 TD.

He still hasn’t practiced yet while recovering from off-season knee surgery. It’s a make it or break it year for Meredith who knows he must step it up or be released. Both receivers play the slot position and chances are the team likely view one or the other as a potential suitor for the job. The Depth in the Wide Receiver room is very deep this year but Mathews and Meredith are the most experienced of the bunch behind the two starters.

The way Rishard Matthews played in Tennessee’s wide open offense posting 65 grabs for 945 yards and 9 TD’s in 2016 (which was his best season) makes an ideal fit here. Meredith is aiming for a return for Big Camp definitely setting up an exciting showdown between the two which could be for the slot here in New Orleans. Stay tuned….
